Modern and classic fountain for the garden
Ah, the soothing sounds of running water, how lovely. You’ve heard it in your boss’s office, before your plane takes off, or during a visit to a spa where you’ve been relaxing. This is because science has discovered time and again that the sound of moving water, whether waves of the sea or the rushing of a waterfall, is nature’s most soothing sound. Buying a beach house may seem like a distant dream, but what you can realistically do today is buy a water fountain for your garden or home. Water fountains are becoming more popular every day in individual homes and gardens because they know how to improve the quality of your experience at home in many different ways. Need another reason? We at Eliassen first get you started with 4 ways fountains can enrich your life and then help you make a choice. Timeless elegance Water fountains have been placed in private and public spaces throughout the ages and during different civilizations. Some are even so well preserved that they can still be admired by visitors from all over the world. From the widely celebrated garden fountains in the Palace of Versailles near Paris to the Trevi Fountain, which to this day is one of Rome’s most famous landmarks. Water fountains have long been considered a symbol of vitality, prosperity and tranquility. Whether you want to place one at your home or in the garden, your fountain is sure to garner the appreciation of everyone who sees it. Everyone who enters your home, whether for a short visit from family or a dinner party, will be charmed, and you will find that a quality fountain will become the focal point of your home. People will continue to enjoy your fountain for generations to come. Improved indoor air quality Nowadays, people are increasingly concerned about oxygen levels in the home, or indoor air quality. In short, a greater number of pollutants has led people to become more concerned about how clean the air they breathe is, and how to improve its quality. While a number of different solutions, such as humidifiers and air purifiers, have been introduced, for the most part they are bulky, noisy and require constant cleaning and maintenance to ensure they are working properly. Quite a chore, in other words. Another solution is to purchase a specific plant species, but keep in mind that these are very expensive and you are not helped with just one. By the way, taking care of these plants is quite a task. In contrast, a water fountain in the house is not only pleasant to the eyes and ears, but also combines the benefits of both a humidifier and an air purifier. While a humidifier works by distributing gaseous water throughout a given space and a purifier uses negative ions to attract dust and dirt particles, a water fountain can do both. The constantly circulating stream of water keeps fresh H20 hydrating and oxygenating the surrounding air while the negative ions draw and purify dust and dirt from the air. Moreover, water fountains are easy to care for and you can enjoy your purchase for a long time. As long as they have enough water and are drained and wiped clean monthly, they will function smoothly for years. Don’t worry if you notice buildup in your water fountain – this is all the dirt you might have otherwise inhaled. White noise With constant urbanization and heavy traffic, many people find it harder than ever to relax in their own homes. They can be disturbed by the sound of passing traffic, renovations or even the noise coming from their own household appliances, such as their dishwashers or air conditioners. This noise seems particularly loud late at night, leading to insomnia and restlessness. If you suffer from similar problems, you can take one of two measures: you can try taking medication to quietly fall asleep or you can find a source of white noise to prevent distractions. The possible side effects of medication in the morning include obvious dizziness and headaches. This makes white noise a much better option, and water fountains have proven to provide the most soothing white noise. Unlike sound clips or electronic recordings, you don’t have to worry about rewinding or repeating the sound of your fountain’s stream. Thanks to the constant stream, you can rest assured that you will get a good night’s sleep and wake up fresh and fruity in the morning. ********** Fresher, more vibrant plants Even the most enthusiastic and dedicated gardeners will find that they can’t always give their precious plants all the attention they deserve. Work, trips and weather can keep you from maintenance and cause flowers and plants to shrivel up and die before they have a chance to fully bloom. A shame, right? Especially since most plants are very expensive anyway. These unfortunate events usually occur during the summer months, when the weather is the most difficult to predict. But while it may not be possible for homeowners to control nature, they can compensate for its shortcomings. By installing a water fountain in your garden, you not only ensure that the plants get the hydration they need, but also that they are insulated from the worst of the heat and have the best chance for pollination. One of the mistakes many people make is to water only the roots of their plants. Often the moisture does not reach the plants’ flowers or fruits because they are farthest from the roots. This can cause them to wilt and eventually die. When this happens, people usually panic and actually overwater their plants. But instead of their flowers will perk up, this only causes the oversaturated roots to rot and thus the entire plant eventually dies. A much better solution (often used by florists) is to gently hydrate the blossoms themselves. This can be done by watering the flowers by hand or by installing a garden fountain. Because a fountain’s water source is in constant motion, water molecules easily diffuse through the air, providing a constant source of hydration. Moreover, this air hydration can protect plants during the hottest and driest months by lowering the temperature in the nearby area. The water from your garden fountain is also appreciated by birds, butterflies and other pollinators. They come to your garden to hydrate and continue to pollinate your flowers, so you can enjoy them for several seasons. Now that you know some ways a fountain can enhance your environment, we’d like to help you make your choice. After all, an outdoor fountain can transform a boring outdoor space into an inviting and relaxing environment. Choosing the right fountain for your landscaping is a combination of personal preference and practicality. Knowing these 10 points about outdoor fountains will help you determine which fountain is the best option for perhaps your new project.

Power source of a fountain Outdoor fountains have different power sources to power options, the two most common of which are wired and solar. A wired fountain operates on an electrical power source to function. In most areas, only a licensed electrician can install a wired outdoor fountain because it is connected as an addition to your home’s electrical grid. Solar-powered outdoor fountains are wildly popular in 2019 because they do not require fixed wiring for your home’s electrical supply. Solar panels on these fountains provide enough power to run the pump under normal conditions. Watering a fountain Most outdoor fountains are connected to a home’s water supply. These fountains need a continuous supply of water; as long as the water is turned on, they will not run dry. There are some smaller fountains that can be filled using a water hose without the need for a permanent connection. Generally, fountains that can be filled with a hose use a pump that continuously circulates water through the fountain. These fountains should be checked periodically to ensure that they contain enough water. Different finishes The finish of the fountain makes a big difference in the way the fountain looks and the care it needs. Concrete and stone fountains usually do not need as much care as some others. Stone fountains tend to look a little more natural and can blend in with their surroundings. Bronze and copper fountains provide a nice contrast to the natural outdoor environment. These may require a little more care than other finishes, but instead look beautiful. A unique sculpture creates a unique look and, incidentally, says a lot about your personal taste and character. Thus, a fountain is, in effect, art. Ultimately, the finish is a consideration that requires you to consider the surroundings. Lighting options You want your fountain to be seen and enjoyed by people. If you plan to spend time in the garden after dark outside, lighting options can help you focus on the fountain. A lighted fountain looks incredibly beautiful at night and is extremely relaxing as you look at it and listen to the water. Although some fountains include lights, it is also possible to place lights around the fountain. If you think white lights are too harsh for the relaxing atmosphere you are creating in your garden, choose colored lights. Amber lights are often considered soothing and are currently in great taste. Multicolored lights can create a fun element. Can’t figure it out? We are happy to assist you in making a conscious choice. Location is important The location of the fountain is one of the most important choices you have to make. Larger fountains may not stand against anything because you need full access to the entire fountain. Smaller fountains should not be placed in areas with lots of greenery or other objects that block access to the fountain. If the fountain requires a constant water supply or a wired power source, it is critical to consider the location of water lines and electrical connections. Complementary furnishings The mere placement of a fountain creates a beautiful look; however, most people often still choose to dress up the area with additional decoration. A paved path leading to the fountain or a water feature around the fountain are two possible options to consider. Planting flowers or ground cover around the fountain helps add beauty to a stand-alone fountain. Cleaning a fountain All fountains obviously need periodic cleaning. A thick dirty deposit of algae can make your fountain look bad. Of course, we don’t want that, right? Some fountains have a cleaning cycle that helps keep them clean. Even if there is a cleaning cycle, you still need to empty the fountain and wipe it down. Each fountain manufacturer has guidelines for cleaning the fountains they produce. Think of it as an instruction booklet from the Ikea. Following those directions can help you keep your fountain in tip-top shape. On the other hand, we offer several products to clean your fountain and keep the water clear. All the information can be found on the website or ask our colleagues. How to care for a fountain in winter? People who live in areas that have freezing temperatures during the winter months need to take care of their fountains to prevent them from bursting when the water freezes. Now in the Netherlands we hardly have stiff winters, but countries like Belgium, France and Germany are more likely to have low temperatures, however. By the way, never say never! Almost all fountains should be drained before the first deep freeze. If the fountain is connected to the home’s water supply, a shut-off valve should be installed so you can turn off the water to prevent frozen pipes. Some people choose to cover the fountain during the winter months. If the fountain is pointy or has elaborate decorative accents, make sure snow and ice weight do not put pressure on those areas when covered. As you will understand by now, fountains come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. If you are looking for inspiration to make something really special out of your garden or home, we would be happy to help you along the way.
